From plain bungalow to pretty cottage

20 May 2012

Pretty.  It’s not often you see that word in an architect’s post but that’s what we had iin mind for this project.  What was a simple bungalow (pictured top) with side extension and cramped loft conversion is now a pretty one and a half storey cottage with 5 bedrooms and 2 reception rooms.  Deceptively spacious you could say.

Our client is delighted with the end result.  The contractor has ably managed the project throughout, with 3 generations of family living on site.  Although it was quite a complicated design challenge, we produced an attractive and buildable design.  So not only do our clients get a lot more space but it was economically delivered too.  The house is much more attractive from the street and the rear elevation sits nicely over the existing conservatory.  The window to the  master bedroom is positioned over it to make the most of the stunning country and river view.

With a good stock of similar housing in Hampshire, there are plenty of opportunities to take a small house and turn it into a fantastic family home.  Even the plainest of houses often have an attractive and generous plot.  Usually the bricks are attractive so projects often only need a bit of econsideration to make them look much prettier.  Less of a bungalow extension but house makeover, and all at a reasonable price.
